How to Check Car Oil

Checking oil level on dipstick

Your car’s oil is essential to having a smooth driving experience every time you’re on Moose Jaw roads. It protects the engine’s internal moving parts, allowing seamless movement when you drive.

You should always ensure that you have the right amount of oil in your vehicle so you can continue enjoying your Weyburn drives. Not sure how to check car oil? No worries! Below is a guide from Capital Cadillac’s service centre to help you about how to check oil levels in cars.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Let’s talk about how to check oil levels in cars. Most traditional vehicles over 5 years old have dipsticks to indicate the oil level, but some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that don’t require dipsticks. If your car has a dipstick, use the quick guide below to safely and easily check your oil levels:

  1. Check the owner’s manual for the appropriate oil level for your specific car.
  2. Put the vehicle in park on level ground and turn off the engine. Do not open the car’s hood until the engine is cold.
  3. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  4. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  5. Re-insert the dipstick back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Dipsticks always have an indicator for the proper oil level in the car. Many have two lines: one closer to the bottom indicating the minimum amount of oil appropriate, and one about 2 inches higher that indicates the maximum amount of oil. If the top of your oil streak is between the two marks the level is good. If it’s below, then you’ll need to add more oil.

Be sure to buy the grade recommended in the owner’s manual, remove the oil filler cap, and then add oil a little until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the proper level.

How to Reset Oil Change Light

Each vehicle has a specific process for resetting the oil change light, but the process is typically the same. Only reset the oil change light after you’ve changed the oil. Here’s how you do it:

How to Reset Oil Change Light: Step-by-Step:

  • Turn all systems of your car off, but leave the engine running.
  • Find the “reset” button or stick on the dashboard (typically found near the speedometer and fuel gauge).
  • Hold the button down until the oil change light begins to flash (signs of resetting may differ per vehicle).
  • Turn the ignition off, wait a few seconds, then turn your car back on.

At this point, the oil light should be reset. If you have any questions regarding how to reset your oil change light, feel free to contact our service team!
